Reported aboard the Henry B June '72, just in time to leave San Diego for
the '72/'73 WestPac cruise; initially assigned to the AN/SPS 39 search radar
then later reassigned to the MK118 (Tartar) computer. Remember when the evap
went down and showers occurred on the main deck when we could catch a rain
squall?? Most memorable time aboard: daylight raid north of the DMZ and
being in the fwrd gun mount one early January morning when the projectile
exploded before leaving the barrel, that got us off the gun line and back in
Subic Bay to be regunned before sending us home. Well Done on the web sight,
great to reminisce!!

Comments:
I reported aboard an STG2 soon to promote to ST1. Henry B. already had Two.
We were prepping
for WesPac and I learned from Marty Combs that he did duty the previous
deployment as
Mt Capt MT52 and was going to be assigned there again. He told me that 2nd
Div was undermanned
and they needed a Mt Capt for MT51. I know a bit and I can do that I said.
I really did not know
a damned thing; had never been inside a mount before. I learned what I
needed to know on the
crossing and that was the best damned deployment that I made. 2nd was a
GREAT Div TOP to bottom.
The way that I remember it was, as long as the guns were up we hit the beach
when in port. I've
communicated back and forth with Pete Nickel; sure would be great to have a
word with
Ivan C, Marty Combs, or any of the rest. Billy Gartner do you still play
Tammy Wynette on a loop =)?
Returning in April of 70 a bunch of us helo'd over to the carrier for a
round robin of volley ball any body else on that?

As I looked at comments of the guys who were on the Henry B the years I was,
I thought of things I havn't thought of in many years. 2 west pac's , dry
dock in portland, countless hours on the fan tail, low vis watch, jp5 in the
fresh water, sandwiches to go out the wardroom kitchen take out port hole,Ect.
Good stuff (mostly) I wonder if Schenkenfelter is still holed up in forward
flammable.

Just kinda updating this from my original post. I left the Wilson in '89
after decomming her and went to a cg , The England . I had way better days
on the Wilson. We were a lot closer as a crew , in my opinion more closer
than any ship in the navy . Steve Darner and I call each other on occasion
just to harrass each each other . I am thinking of joining either the air
guard or the air force reserve here in alabama and put in 12 years so I can
retire with 20 and when I can ....I'll have benefits that are cheaper than
what they cost me now :-) I'm steaming these days at the University of
Alabama as a boiler operator heating the campus during the winter . almost
have 15 yrs now. might hang on for 15 more and then go enjoy life even more
.

My children and I found this great site when we were talking about my naval service. I have great memories of the Henry B, and the Westpac of 76/77. I've told them about the close call "unrepping" with the USS Enterprise. When a young quartermaster fresh off a frigate, made a mistake, and the XO, LCDR Benepe ("Darryl Beno") avoided a collision and saved lives with quick thinking and a cool head. Great memories of port calls in Hong Kong, (Pinkys tattoo parlor, the Sea palace floating restaurant, Chin Hae and Pusan Korea, (Brrrrrr-cold!) and of course Subic bay, Manilla and Baguio PI. Burnie Tasmania was a whole different world, after crossing the line and becoming a shellback. Great memories for a kid out of Pennsylvania. thanks to the Wilson and all the great sailors i had the privelage of serving with.
Michael

My father served on the H B Wilson, though I am not sure
the extent of his service. He died in 1978 while in California while I was
still young. He
loved the Navy and we have many momentos of his service, one of the ones I
treasure most is his "Shellback" Card which he received onboard the H B.Wilson
... 17th of July 1968 (Longitude 146-13). I have run across photos of the
ceremony too.

Just sitting reminiscing about the good old days. Putting the cruisebook together, Shellback initiations, great times in Australia and our historic visit to Brunei...good times and great memories. Went to recruiting duty from the Henry B. and it burned me out. Saw a side of our Navy I didn't like so I left, five years before retiring and regret it every day. I settled in Everett, WA but somewhere along the way ended up in Texas via Ohio. Ya gotta go where the money is, right? But life has been fun. I miss the boat, miss the crew, and hope everyone I had the good fortune to know has had as great a life as I have since then. Here's to you guys!

Proudly I found and copied pictures of the H.B. Wilson and display them on my desk at work. I get some good comments on her. "The Magnificent 7" being a "Steamer" was well known by the ships we pulled along side of and blasted from the PA system as we raised a rooster tail in pulling away. If anyone remebers "Van" (mm2 Van Orsdale) would appreciate the fact he would stuff rags in the PA speaker in main control during these times. He was quite a character. My duties were in Main Control, engineroom #1, making the fresh water. Of course I served with a lot of other divisions handling ammo, bringing on food, and taking on fuel. That little incident with spilling oil during refueling and "M" division being assigned to clean it up still brings back memories. Doing so while firing on a shore battery, hitting the battery, and running for cover as it blew up was the highlight of the day. It was not on the "Plan-of-the-day", for sure. Are ther any engineering E-3 and below at that time reading this remember those days? I am especially interested to hear from those that participated that day (E-3 and below). Fell free to contact me for any other reason, too.

Wow. Time does leave the good and fade the bad. HBW was my first (and really only) ship. Did two WestPacs (reported aboard in PI during the first). Seeing Darrell Wilkinson and John Saviour's names prompted me to write. My elder son was born while we were in the yards in Portland. CAPT van der Schroeff (Ret) and CAPT Pete Grant (former Weps) came to my wetting-down for CDR in 1998. Lost touch with the few folks I had contact with. Rick Dempsey (former COMMO) was killed in a Tomcat crash in 1988. Jeez, lots of memories coming now...mostly good.
Best regards to
those shipmates who remember/care

Arrived on board just after the ship left Portland. Was greeted by FTG-3 (BaronVon) Strom. Made the next two WESTPACS and have lots of fond memories. Funny how the bad memories fade into funny stories or are forgotten altogether! Would love to hear from any and all of my old shipmates. Anyone know what ever happened to C. Belt, B. Thais, T. Mabry, or any of the other 'Gun Plot' Boys?

Just stumbled upon this wonderful place! The time spent on the ol' Henry B in retrospect, were some of the most formative years of my life.I bitched up a storm (like the rest of us did)from time to time, but what did I know?Hell...I was only a kid at the time. Now 30 something years later,I look back on those times with GREAT pride. From Long beach in '74, to a WESTPAC in '75 and '76, and back to the yard again in '77.
Looking at the pictures bring back so many memories. Some funny and some not quite so funny. If the 2008 reunion is on the east coast,I'll do all I can to make it!

even more in Myrtle (2nd tourist destination in US) with 106 golf courses. Delighted to read about VADM Shanahan's interest. I expect a number of

Comments:
This website is great! I have many memories of my time on the "Hammerin'
Hank". Despite her complement of weapons, sensors, and the benefit of a
redundant steam plant that made it a little more difficult to go "hot, dark,
and quiet," WILSON's biggest asset was her crew. I was privileged to have
the counsel of some insightful Chiefs and First-Class Petty Officers who
knew a little about bringing up a junior officer, and I was lucky to have
had an outstanding group of men to work with in both the EW Division and in
2nd Division. Those who were there- you all had your moments, as did I, but
there was not bad man to be found among all the men who served in my
divisions. You were all great guys, and I will always be grateful to you and
proud of the things we accomplished. The wardroom had many fine officers,
and a few characters. I defer on the latter issue, lest I find myself
included. (smile) I enjoyed our Westpac in 76-77, and have many a sea story
from the experience.
I left WILSON for law school and stayed in the Reserves, changing my
designator to 2550 (JAG Corps) after graduation. I practiced law in Raleigh,
NC while moving up in the Reserves. For four of my last 6 years in the
Reserves, I was Staff Judge Advocate for the Naval Space Command as it
transitioned into the Naval Network and Space Operations Command. I saw
first-hand that warfighting has undergone a sea change (pun intended) since
the days of WLR-1s and grease-pencil plots. I retired from the Reserves as a
Captain a couple of years ago, which proves that miracles can happen. At
about the same time, I transitioned into my current position as an Assistant
Attorney General with the NC Department of Justice. Three years as Legal
Officer in WILSON apparently had no deterrent effect on me.
I would love to hear from any of the folks I served with while in WILSON,
and especially from the men who served in EW or 2nd Division while I was
there, and of course, my fellow denizens of the wardroom, some of whom I
have been privileged to run into since leaving WILSON.
This website is a great tribute to a fine warship and the outstanding men
who crewed her.

Hello All, Just wanted to update my info. Was Mt 52 GMG during 75 cruise. ASROC GM during 72 cruise. After leaving active duty I was attached to MIUW 12 in Long Beach, "kind of" drifted in and out of active reserve until 1985.
Currently living near the Los Angeles harbor area (South Bay). Still in contact with Al Cottle (Mt 51 GMG during 75 cruise). Outpost leader for Point Man Ministries South Bay (a veterans outreach ministry).
Has anyone had contact with Charlie Brink (TM3) 72 cruise? Any of the 2nd Division crew from the 75 cruise?

Lots of history. We were there for the war in 72/73 with time on the gun line and a fair amount of time north of the 17th parallel. Most of our "raids" were night missions except for one daylight mission at Hon Mai(Vinh Guang area of N. Vietnam) where Commander Jensen was awarded the Silver Star. We were there for the cease fire, then back in 74/75 for the evacuation of Phnom Penh, Cambodia (Pol Pot), the evacuation of Saigon, and the recapture of the SS Mayaguez (Last Battle of the Vietnam War). Some of my photos are in "Four Days of Mayaguez" by Roy Rowan, U.S. Navy Proceedings Magazines, "The Last Battle" by Ralph Wetterhaun, and the Gerald Ford Museum in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Wow I'm overwhelmed. Ran across the web site by accident and was truly amazed to see The Magnificent Seven had her own web site. The proudest two years of my life was serving on board the USS H. Wilson DDG-7. I have a framed picture of her and also a framed pitcure of the USS Hoel DDG-13 hanging in my office. As you can see by my e-mail address I still think of the Navy. I would had used DDG007 years ago when I set up my e-mail address but it was already taken. I have continued my service to the country and next month I will have 22 years with the VA Hosp. here in Detroit. Good Luck to you all and "Go Navy".
After reading some of the many comments from former shipmates it got me
thinking of some of the best times I had while out to sea. Where else can I say
I got to sit in on the drums and perform stairway to heaven with the rest of the
band in the middle of the pacific during the night. Or climb up the mast during
the night when we were going though the tail end of a typhoon to change a
running light. All in all I would do it all over again exactly the way it was
back then. That is of course minus the engineering birthday cakes.

I checked aboard HBW as an SM2, fresh from civilian life (Broken Service) in 1982 while she was in Portland, OR for the yard period and transferred off in 1985 as an SM1. Oh what a time!!!! After the yard period and work-ups, made the cruise of 1984 forging some friendships that will last a lifetime. Specifically, Mike (SM2) Ware, and Mike (OS2) Legaspi are two that I have stayed in touch with, but there were so many more that I have lost contact with (SMC Rick Lopez, SM2 Bob "BEBO" Haughen, RMC Reece Pouncil to name a few). Would really welcome the opportunity to get together again sometime, drink a few cold ones, and tell a few lies. To all who were on the "Hammerin' Hank" during that time, Hello and I hope everything has worked out well for you. All my best, Darrell.

She was my first ship. I really enjoyed the 12 months
in Portland Oregon shipyard (Northwest Marine Iron Works). Dave Tresch got his
car wrecked up there, remember that? Deployment 1984 was a true westpac, lot of
port hopping, overnight liberty and no 3 man buddy rule like today. I wonder
where Ron Golinski and Dave Tresch are now.

Served on the Wilson fron 80 to 82 in R div. The only MR onboard. I haven't talked to any of the old crew since the day I mustered out. We need to change that. Lots of good liberty. Lots of good memories. I wouldn't trade those days for anything.
I would like to here from some of the old crew. Haven't forgotten not getting a shower for several days because there wasnt enough fresh water to keep the boilers running. We had it good back in the HT shop though, we were the end of the water line. Usually just enough left in the line to get a quick splash. I wouldn't trade those times for anything.

The Henry B.
Shout out to Craig Van Ness, Terry Gulledge, Mark Cyr, Donny Snyder, Mark Boland (Aka Pappy), Bob Laventure, and all the other OI guys from the early/mid 80's, sorry if I missed anyone.
Had a blast on Westpac 84.
I remember meeting her (DDG-7) while still in drydock at Portland, forgot the OOD at the time but the MOW was Larry Fehardo (mispelled I'm sure) the big Hawaiian.
We made it through the LOE's and of course Battle E, followed a submarine around for bit while playing tag with the Russian Balzam.
Chief Frazier was the best Chief ever, Olavason not so.........
Who else remembers Hop the Merciless (Kevin you still out there?) Sardine and M7M sandwiches. Eating pizza on the DRT while onloading at Long Island, Super Signalman running through the Bridge, Jimmi Hendrix playing through the sound powered phones. Parks puking at breakwater, Jimi (the stork ass bitch) not far behind. Verticle Plot boards, Mo Boards and DRT's that was the life for me, yes I was a twidget.
Sorry she had to be turned into a Barge, not a fitting
end for such a fine ship.

The "Hammerin Hank" was by far the best ship I ever
served on. Just after departing her in 1985, I did CV/CVN combat systems test
bed engineering, then onto the amphibious world and Landing Craft Air Cushions (LCAC)
as a plank owner of the unit and ACU-5 in Panama City, FL and subsequently Camp
Pendleton, CA. I finally retired under the T.E.R.A. in October of 1997 after
seven deployments (three in the Middle East).

to the Brenner brothers or Chet Norris? I ran into Tom Copher while he was
serving on another FF and I was on the USS Roark but lost track of him. Man,
could'nt believe it when I ran into this website. I've got a Henry B ballcap

I was injured on the USS Robison, DDG-12 and ended up in
the Hospital in Yokosuka for a few months. When I got out of the hospital, I was
a brig chaser for a while. Then I was MAA for the RILA Baracks (Restriction in
Lou of Arrest). I was finally flown back to San Diego just in time to catch the
Wilson, DDG-7 leaving for West Pack. I was not a happy camper but I made a lot
of good friends. Had some unbelievable good times in Hong Kong, Subic Bay, and
Subic City. Got helo'ed off the Wilson end of 1972 while they were still on Gun
Line. I miss my gun. Remember.. happiness is a warm gun. Enjoyed reading all of
the entries here. Good job!

I was an HT2 for most of my time on board the Henry B. but made First Class before I got off in 1981. I worked in "R" Division the entire time and was the only one certified to weld on the high pressure steam systems so I spent a considerable time in the holes. Looking to see if any one else remembers those days. I was really saddened to hear they reduced her to a target ship in 1983.

Well, number one, we never had a cruise book in 1972 because nobody wanted to take it for action, so I don't think I'd be looking around trying to find one! I still have my copies of Rick Shain's pictures that he took along with another set, some other ship forwarded to us. I had mine laminated so they would preserve better over the years. If somebody from the 72 cruise needs a copy, I can see if they can be reproduced or not.
Remember CDR. Jensen's wedding in Hong Kong? 300 Best men at a wedding has to make for a helluva party!
I use to hang with Phillips, Fath, Demaria, Kahler, Chamberlain, Erickson, Miller, and just about everybody from Engineering. Phillips passed away over a year ago from Pancreas cancer. Our reserve unit provided the casket detail and I presented the flag to the family. It was a very emotional day for me.
On the lighter side, I'm very much appreciative of the effort going into the re-unions, just haven't been able to attend so far, but hope to in the near future. If anybody has a heads up on "when and where" the next one will be, please let me know!
It's nice to hear from everybody and looking forward to seeing all before long!

Just wanted to update my email address. How's everyone doing? Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year! Dave Rapp, I remember you! I also remember that Rick Shain had been running around taking pictures during our raid on Hon Me Island. (please refer to message number 323) If I remember correctly wearing a football helmet?! I remember seeing him after the mission with a blue or purple helmet still on his head, camera in hand. It's really bad luck that the pictures were lost.
By the way Rick, Mount 52 was CASREP'ed prior to the mission, so Mount 51 was to fire the whole mission of 100 rounds. We got off one shot when 51's breach block failed to drop, and the next round got smashed into the back of it. That was it for Mount 51. As I remember Cmdr. Jensen brilliantly maneuvered Wilson to avoid enemy counterbattery, while air bursts exploded all around us, and shells fell so close to the ship that plumes of water rained on the ship. Pieces of shrapnel were found later on the decks. Some of those I think were recovered by you, Rick. Correct me if I'm wrong. Meanwhile, as the skipper was busy dodging bullets, four or five guys and I were trying to get rid of the HE shell and the ruptured powder can from the back of the gun. I finally was able to remove the broken powder can and shove it out the back of the gunmount. Then the projectile came sliding back with the nose cone containing the fuse broken off and hanging by two wires! I thought it might be he
althier for all involved if the shell was no longer on board, so I grabbed it from the "keyhole" in the rear of the gun and jumped down with it in my arms, ran over to the rail and threw it overboard. I then ran back and jumped back through the hatch of Mt. 51 and was helped in by a guy whose name I don't remember. We rode out the remainder of the mission in that gunmount listening to the airbursts exploding around the ship. Cmdr. Jensen then odered the engine room to make smoke and we hightailed it outa there! That's my story and I'm sticking with it.
That's how I remember that early morning daylight raid. I'd like to hear about other crewmembers' recollections from that wild day.
Someone has to have that cruise book from '72.

Operations:December 1979.
While on route to Hong Kong for Christmas R&R a message arrived to the radio room of the Magnificant 7. The initiating preceeding series of communication transmission events occurred as follows: A ham radio operator (radio hobbyist) in Hong Kong had randomly tuned into an at sea distress call on short wave radio. (HF 3-30 Megahertz). He alerted the Hong Kong Coast Guard and passed off the radio frequency. The Hong Kong Coast Guard commenced a search and rescue operation. Upon further communication the Hong Kong Coast Guard contacted the US Naval Consulate in Hong Kong. The US Consulate passed the information to the US Naval Attache'. The Naval Attache' passed the communication to the Seventh Fleet Commander. A few unknown hours after the first transmission, the USS Henry B. Wilson, DDG 7 received a radio transmission commanding it to cease its R&R and start a search and rescue operation in the South China Sea. There were four US Citizens adrift in a sail boat, one of
them the son of the Judge Advocate General of the US Trust Territory of Guam. The Wilson was searching for a 27 foot sailboat in a storm. During December the typical unforgiving weather in the South China Sea is cold and harsh.
The crew had a distressed and necessarily ambivalent feeling about their assigned endeavor, for earlier in that year the Wilson had searched for three days for an unidentified small aircraft that was reportedly lost at sea. There was little idea of where to start the search, what to look for and when to quit, until finally it was commanded to break faith and resume its normal patrol assignment.
The sea was laying claiming to yet another group of hapless voyagers; these ones fool hardy. A passenger had ordered, and his crew of friends had taken delivery of a sail boat constructed in Hong Kong, at affordable prices; a Hong Kong special. It was apparent to the casual observer that the crew had no experience with seasonal weather of the South China Sea.
But the Wilson had an edge this time. The beleaguered adventureres were in communicating with the ship. They knew not their position, for their sextant was of no avail in a cloudy sky. The sail boat had lost the useage of its radio navigation. The wandering crew could only pass sun line navigation to the Wilson and the ships Quatermasters were competently drawing their lines over maps as navigators do, resolving the longitudes, as best they could in accordance with the Wilson's cronometers and the compass reading on the battered sail boat.
Inspite of the lack of spare parts that plagued the US Navy during the downsizing of the President Carter administration, enough parts had been burgled out of the Wilson's failed seven HF radio receivers to keep one of them working. One was enough, one would due. It had been kept neatly repaired and operating by a meticulous and astute sailor who had trained himself--without instructors--on electronics in the Navy. All of the other radio's had their depleted and damaged parts assiduously tracked, accounted and ordered. Not only spare parts for the radios were in dire short supply, but propulsion, radar, signal lights--the whole lot on the ship. The ship was steaming on a shoe string budget. It was a time whe weekly gossip included guessing which ship was being towed back to port by a contracted ocean tug due to lack of spare parts while on its patrol commitments.
Up on the bridge of the Wilson the Officer On Duty (OOD) had already selected a search pattern out of a volume of Navy search pattern recommendations. The book had been set down in plain view as though somehow, in this game of chance, one would provide the best answer.
Outside, the Hong Kong Coast Guard search plane had just overflown the Wilson. It was low on fuel. The storm cloud cover forced it to fly below 400 feet and consume its fuel fighting the head winds and the denser atmosphere. Had the plane been able to fly at altitude its use of fuel would have allowed it to stay on duty. The plane waved good bye. There would not be enough daylight for it to return after refueling in Hong Kong. It climbed into the clouds to save itself.
All night the Henry B stayed in the search. Her signal men had turned on the signaling communication lights into high power spotlights scanning the horizon, looking for that little bobbing boat. Atop the ship, where they stood, on the signal bridge one could see 30 yards at best. The driving rain, cloudy skies and heavy seas reflected back or diffused the light so that it was barely a help at all. The Wilson was hoping to be seen rather than hoping it could see the sail boat in the vast swirling, churning, tumultuous void.
During the night a second ship was impressed into duty by the Law of the Sea, the freighter President Polk. An American sounding name but cheaply chartered in the Philippines, thus entitling the ship to all the resources and protection the Phillipine government would have to offer should it be pirated on the distant high seas. Ironic, it was coming to the rescue of US Citizens who would not come to its rescue unless dictated by the Law of the Sea, which applies to close proximity only. It pays to fly the US flag. Just ask the owner and crew of the Mayaguez; another Henry B. Wilson rescue four years previously.
Also, in the pitch of night, the US Navy had dispatched from over 600 miles away was a plane and crew that the Navy had designed for conditions very similar to those presently endured. The long dwelling, slow and loitering P-3 Orion. Through the night it flew, through the storm all night long, not being able to bring its talents to bear until sunrise, which would be the timing of its arrival on station.
Daylight did arrive, in a late, dreary, cloudy and fiercely storming manner. The radio transmissions announced the arrival of the P-3 on the scene. Radar had indicated its presence and approach to the ship. As the hemisphere of the earth came to the light of day the P-3 made its decent and dropped out of the heavy scud, below 400 feet, bringing its multitude of human eyeballs peering out of its windows to bear.
The President Polk could be seen steaming its pattern in the opposite direction from the USS Henry B. Wilson. Then it slowly dissappeared over the horizon, falling off the edge of the world.
Communication in the night had disclosed that the little unrescued sail boat had its bow stove in and was in serious danger of sinking. The engine had been soaked with water and rendered useless. All that it had remaining was its sea anchor, and that was slipping fast. Neither the cord nor the deck fittings could bear up the heavy protracted strain in the storm without showing their weakness and propensity of failure.
Hours passed.
The UHF radio frequency for the P-3 Orion broke the silent desparation. "USS Wilson, we've found them." In a rescue operation news is good news. It was a brief moment of relief. There was no jubilation, only preparation for the next effort which would endanger crew members of the Wilson. The Wilson steamed for nearly three hours through the storm to the location of the hovering P-3; the location of the drifters.
The storm had not granted clemency to anyone. The sail boat was simply uncontrolled and the USS Wilson could not bring its 2200 tons close by to effect a rescue. The motor whale boat would have to be launched. This was a very touchy operation. A rescue party of boatswains entered the motor whale boat still in its davits. The davits extended out over the deadly sea and the lowering operation began. The motor whale boat was descending by its two cables, one fore and one aft. A swell rose up and contacted the mwb. Its cables went slack. The swell receeded and the mwb fell till the cables snapped tightly and suspended the weight again. Several times the waves bore up the mwb and several times they fell away from the untrusting boatswains in a treacherous scenario. Several times, till suddenly at the right moment of a swell the command came to, "Release cables!". The motor whale boat fell away from the ship dropping some 30 feet down then coming back up to eye le
vel with the Wilson's main deck. The boatswain quickly sped away from the danger of colliding with the Wilson.
Off they were toward the little bobbing sail boat. Off in the heavy seas, that little open craft motor whale boat. Coming along side the worthy sailors beckoned to the beleaguered to jump aboard the motor whale boat. The sailors in a manly fashion grabbed the US Citizens and caught them up out of their sinking vessel, all four and their baggage.
The most difficult part was yet to come. The MWB would have to come along side the lumbering Wilson and re-attach the two hoisting cables, simultaneously. Along side the MWB motored waiting for the right moment to come along side the Wilson. The Officer of the Deck had smartly placed the ship to offer maximum protection from wind and waves. The hoisting cables were distended and slung about by the sea, often becoming intertwinned with eachother. Up to eye level rose the MWB, then down it fell with the receeding swells. Up again and again, for nearly a half hour. Then the command, "Fasten cables!" came roaring over the noise of wind and sea so that everyone deckside heard it unmistakable. Down the MWB fell and the cables went taught with a bang! Both ends of the MWB were fixed and the hoisting operation began. Up came the sea swell lifting the MWB to eye level and slackening the hoist cables till they lay about endangering the crew in the MWB. Down it fell agai
n. Bang! The cables went tight again as the entire weight of the MWB was suspended. Up again and down. Bang! Up. Down. Bang! Up. Down. Bang! Till the motor whale boat and its two crews were hoisted above the grasp of the churning waves.
It was over in a moment. The Wilson had succeeded in its rescue of 4 US Citizens in the South China Sea, that cold and stormy week. The ship resumed its previous course; its course to Hong Kong, as though fate were returning the rescued US citizens to their last safe point of origin. Although the sail boat owner had pleaded with the captain of the USS Wilson to take his sail boat in tow back to Hong Kong the Captain could not oblige and they both considered the rescue over.
In the happy ending that ensued, the entire crew of the Henry B. Wilson received an open welcome to the house of the son of the Judge Advocate General of the Island of Guam. When the ship returned from the Western Pacific to San Diego the Los Angeles Times sent reporters and published the story on the harsh weather rescue.
Haze grey,
Timothy Leonakis

For Ralph Healy, previous entry, please drop me an
e-mail. I am the guy with the Green Toyota Land Cruiser that went on some
camping trips together in the mountains of California. I see by your entry you
settled in the Pacific Northwest. I settled in Oklahoma after the Navy.
Weren't you and Jean from Nebraska if I recall.
Please drop me a line I would like to share our travels.
I attended the first reunion in San Diego (Sept 2004) and enjoyed it very much,
maybe they will put together a reunion in the midwest, I will try to attend it.
I was not able to make the second one in Maryland.

When I joined the Wilson in San Diego , I was a stupid kid from the midwest. I
sure did a lot of growing up on my two westpacs, months on the gun line off the
coast of Vietnam, and on liberty in ports all over Asia. Met some great guys
that I'll never forget, got the shit scared out of me a couple of times (anyone
remember the forward 5" 54 mount blowing up?), lots of excitement and boredom
too. Do any of you guys remember climbing the ladder down into Main Issue where
one of us Storekeeper guys would find your repair parts for you? Remember the
constant firing of the forward and aft mounts, 24/7 for days and weeks at a
time? Crossing the equator and becoming a shellback on the way to Singapore?
How about the time we went up to Russia to watch them during their naval war
games? It was over thirty years ago, but I remember it like yesterday. You
guys were, and still are the greatest people I ever met.

Really stunned to see this website! And so many memories of that first and ONLY WESTPAC in 76/77! Chief Ellis in Chinhae, where I did my first Shore Patrol. Started on that long road of Navy Law Enforcement! Converted to MA1 in 79 after transferring to USS Henderson (DD-785), then got out, went to undergrad and then law school. Came back into the Reserve as an MA1 in 1989. Commissioned Law Enforcement/Physical Security LDO in 1994 from USS Copeland (FFG-25.) Have been Security Officer at SubBase San Diego, Naval Forces Korea, CINCPACFLT (mobilized after 9/11) NAS North Island, and NSGA Kunia. On my second CO tour as CO of the Navy Region Southwest Metro Navy Security Force unit. I missed the Henry B's decomm ceremony by a few days when I entered the Reserve. A great first ship and I will never forget the lessons learned there!

Although what happen to me aboard the Wilson put me in a wheelchair (service
connected) i remember the good times and the good shipmates. Even when the going
got tough you always knew the man beside you had your back. Was sure sorry to
hear the way the Wilson was put down.
The one thing I was sorry about was the morning we were to pull out of Pearl to head toward Viet Nam, they woke me up and told me if I was off ship in 30 minutes I would stay there. ( needless to say I was off) I didn't get the chance to say bye to all I want to. Hope all are doing well. Great site!

I was the DK2 in the supply department. I remember slipping out
of Da Nang, and the Magnificent 7 (Marlboro) song playing. Being fired upon
while off the Gun Line up North and the ship being hit, and the gals, beer, fun
and my buddies in P.I.
I remember becoming a Shellback while on our way to "Down Under"
I am the one that handed out the money on pay day and helped you all spend it
while over on shore with the gals and beer.
Yep, I remember those days and miss a lot of the guys. My little payroll office
was just off the mess deck.

Did my Middie Cruise summer of 1967 aboard the HBW while at USNA. The HBW was just back from Viet Nam and was part of a group to "show off the fleet". We steamed to Seattle and tied-up at the CG piers. Visitors were waiting to board immediately, so I was assigned to watch on the ASROC deck. The chief handed me a side arm, and instructed me not to let anyone on the deck. I asked him if I should shoot violators. He said no; just make mean faces at them. Then on to Pearl Harbor. On the way to Pearl we fired a lot of rockets and I got a great tan on the signal bridge. Pearl was great. We midshipmen rotated through all of the departments taking training and watches. Learned a lot, worked with some great guys, and won most of the boxing matches on the fantail. Thanks to the crew for a life time great memory.

I am looking for a copy or reproduction of the 1975 Cruise Book for my collection of service in the Navy. All of my items will go to my son.
If anyone would like to loan me their copy, I can get it to a professional printer for copying and then return it at my expense. Naturally, I would like to have my own copy.
I have patches from the H.B. during that cruise but no book.
To this day when I hear the theme song from the "Magnificent Seven", I always think of the Henry B. Wilson. For those who don't remember, they played that going into and out of ports.

fired upon by NVA artillery and that the WILSON returned fire. Are there
any other references I can examine IRT this specific action taken by the
