Reunions

The 2012 Reunion started in Seattle, WA at the Holiday Inn Renton on Saturday Sept 8th. While several shipmates arrived a few days earlier to sightsee, most arrived on the 8^th.

On Sunday Sept 9^th we boarded a chartered bus (part of the hotel room rate) that took us to Seattle’s Pier 91 where the Star Princess was waiting. We had 76 on this Cruise Reunion to Alaska. We departed Pier 91 at 4pm under semi-cloudy skies but mild temperatures heading “North to Alaska”.

During our cruise, the Star Princess will traveled 1,974 nautical miles at approximately 18.9 knots. She was 950ft long and 118ft wide compared to the USS Wilson at 437ft long and 47ft wide.

Monday was our first day at sea (quite choppy), again under cloudy skies. It was our first formal dining evening. The ship scheduled a private cocktail party before dinner for our group in the Wheelhouse Lounge with an open bar. Dan showed some movies that shipmates had taken while on board……….1963 and 1968.

Tuesday found us docked at 6:30am in Ketchikan having passed through the Tongass Narrows. Our clocks were set back 1 hour until Friday when we regained our hour. There was a light drizzle during the morning with temps about 55 degrees. We had until 3:30pm to enjoy the shore excursions and see the town.

Wednesday we awoke to the majestic Tracy Arm Fjord with its many waterfalls, glaciers, and icebergs…….spectacular! At about 10:30am we headed to Juneau arriving at 1:30pm. and scheduled to leave at 9:30pm. We were told the temps were mid-40s but didn’t need the parkas we brought with us…….sweatshirts were fine. No rain this day.

From Juneau we headed to Skagway on Thursday, arriving at 6:30am. Another mild day with no rain.

Friday was a day at sea but much calmer than Monday. It was also our second formal dinner so we scheduled the group picture to be taken at 9:30pm in the Atrium.
